Despite primary educa­tion be­ing free in Ugan­da, fa­mi­lies still face high costs. Clas­ses of be­tween 60 and 120 chil­dren, a lack of tea­ching ma­ter­ials and the in­ade­quate qua­li­fi­ca­­tions of tea­chers mean that ma­ny chil­dren do not at­tend school at all or learn very little. 70 per cent (most­ly girls) do not com­ple­te pri­ma­ry school.

 

Africa(k)now is a young NGO de­di­ca­ted to strengthe­ning school educa­tion. It aims to achieve this through tea­cher train­ing, the establish­ment and de­velop­ment of mo­del schools, and in­come-ge­ne­ra­ting pro­jects. The or­ga­ni­sa­tion is cur­rently work­ing with three schools in Ugan­da. One of these is the Africare Nur­sery School in Kya­kyeyo, which was foun­ded in 2022 by the lo­cal part­ner Africa(k)now Ugan­da.

 

To ensure that chil­dren with and with­out dis­abilit­ies can con­tinue to learn using in­no­va­tive me­thods, a new build­ing with two class­rooms is to be con­struc­ted here in 2027, fun­ded by the foun­da­tion. The class­rooms will be used for a va­rie­ty of pur­po­ses as part of Africa(k)now’s wi­der edu­ca­tio­nal pro­jects and will there­fore be in con­stant use.
